Local Development

You will need a Personal Web Server (PWS) installed on your stand-alone development computer to use StoreFront 2000, plus Microsoft FrontPage 2000 (FP2K). StoreFront 2000 is an add-in to FrontPage 2000 and will not function without FP2K.

I have some detailed help on setting up and configuring PWS 4.0 here.

Note: If you are running Windows 2000 Professional, you should install the limited version of IIS 5.0 as your web server, not PWS.

The PWS acts as a local Internet Information Server (IIS) so you can build and test your StoreFront (and other FrontPage) webs and use all the features and functions supported by the FrontPage web extensions.

Note: FrontPage 2000 defaults to creating disk-based webs but a StoreFront web must be based (hosted) on a web server, which PWS is for your local computer.

However, unlike the earlier FrontPage 98, FP2K does not include a PWS on it's installation CDs, and if you use the one from the older FrontPage 98 CD, it is an earlier version (PWS 2.0) and needs to be updated to run SF2K correctly.

If you are still using Windows 95 (Win95), you can download a newer version PWS 4.0 from Microsoft. If you are using Windows 98 (Win98) or Windows 98 Second Edition (Win98SE), there is a copy of PWS 4.0 on the Windows CD. You can load the PWS 4.0 from the Win98 CD on a Win95 system.

Look here for more help on installing and configuring PWS.
