There are two different programs called Personal Web Servers.
The FrontPage Personal Web Server (FP PWS) was included with FrontPage 97 and 98 and is a very limited web server and should not be used for serious web development. The Microsoft Personal Web Server (MS PWS) was released later and came in two major versions, described below. An early version of MS PWS was included with FrontPage 98.
If you did not have a PWS loaded on your computer when you installed FrontPage 97 or 98, you were told you had to install a PWS and may have had a choice of the FrontPage PWS (FP PWS) and the Microsoft PWS (MS PWS), depending on the version of FrontPage. The Microsoft PWS is required to support ASP - the FP PWS will not and is a very limited PWS. If you did install the FrontPage PWS, you must uninstall it before going any further.
Even if you installed the original version Microsoft PWS (version 2.0) from the FrontPage 98 CD-ROM, it does not automatically install support for ASP. To add it to this early version of MS PWS, you need to run the following program from the FrontPage 98 CD-ROM: \60 Minute Intranet Kit\60 Minute Intranet Kit\modules\asp.exe. Execute this program from the CD-ROM to install ASP support to this version of MS PWS.
Warning! If you are using the later Microsoft PWS Version 4.0 do not run the above file, as ASP support is already included in MS PWS 4.0.
Windows 2000 users should not install the MS PWS, as a limited version of IIS 5.0 is provided for installation from the Windows 2000 CD.
